An instrument to detect very slight differences in color of solutions of different chemicals and thus measure the quantity of the chemical present. It consists of a light source, an optical prism for providing monochromatic light; i.e., light of a single wavelength only, and a device for measuring the intensity of the light beam after it has passed through the solution. Traces of aluminum in steel may be determined in this way.
