Chemical also known as methyl cyanide, formula CH₃CN. It is emitted from incomplete combustion of vegetable matter, notably biomass, for example, cigarettes. Acetonitrile is relatively unreactive in the troposphere and thus reaches the stratosphere, where it participates in ion–molecule reactions.
